Canada’s Competition Bureau is preparing to release a new report that details its findings from a study it conducted into grocery prices.
The Competition Bureau has said that it will release its “Retail Grocery Market Study” on June 27 and meet with journalists to discuss the findings.
The study, which began in October 2022, examines competition in Canada’s grocery industry and recommends ways for governments to boost competition and lower prices for consumers.
Canadians have been struggling with food prices that have skyrocketed coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic and fueled an overall rise in inflation.
The Competition Bureau said last fall when it began the study that grocery prices in Canada have been growing at the fastest rate in 40 years.
The report will land days after Canada Bread was fined $50 million for engaging in a price-fixing scheme designed to artificially raise the price of bread products.
The competition agency has said that its report seeks to answer questions about competition in the grocery industry and what drives price increases.
