China’s Alibaba Adds Generative A.I. To Apps

Chinese technology giant %Alibaba ($BABA) has unveiled a new generative %ArtificialIntelligence (A.I.) model that it plans to integrate into all of its apps.

In a filmed demonstration that was released online, Alibaba’s A.I. model wrote invitation letters, planned trip itineraries, and advised shoppers on products to buy.

Alibaba’s demonstration coincided with the Chinese government in Beijing releasing new rules outlining how generative A.I. is to be used and managed in the nation of 1.4 billion people.

Alibaba said it’s A.I. technology will be immediately integrated into %DingTalk, the company’s workplace messaging app, as well as its smartphone voice assistant.

Alibaba, which is China’s largest e-commerce company, said it also plans to make it’s A.I. technology available to clients so they can build their own customized large language models.

Meanwhile, the draft rules published by the Chinese government’s Cyberspace Administration said the country supports A.I.’s innovation but that content generated by the technology must adhere to the nation’s socialist values as well as laws on data security and privacy protection.

Companies that run afoul of the government’s new A.I. rules face fines and/or criminal charges, said the Chinese government.

Other governments around the world are also looking at how to regulate generative A.I. technology, which has sparked concerns about disinformation and the loss of jobs.

The Italian government has gone so far as to ban the use of chatbots such as %ChatGPT in that European country. China continues to censor and tightly control the internet in its home market.

Alibaba’s stock is flat (up 0.01%) over the past 12 months at $101.54 U.S. per share.
