Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, said on Monday that President Barack Obama’s second term should be a time for Washington to work together.
Wasserman Shultz, who spoke to RTTNews at an inaugural reception honoring Latinos in Government, said the economy remains the top priority for elected officials.
“First and foremost we obviously have to focus on getting the economy turned around, creating jobs, making sure that we can strike a balanced approach to deficit reduction and fight for the middle class and working families,” she said.
Wasserman Shultz said she hoped that the GOP would understand that now is the time to work together.
“What I hope is that Republicans recognize that we absolutely have to work together,” she said. “We can’t engage in ‘my way or the highway politics’ and that we have a much better opportunity of helping the middle class and working families succeed” by working together.
She added, “They understand that we each have to meet each other half way. If they don’t understand that we’re going to have a much tougher struggle getting things turned around.”
Wasserman Shultz said she was optimistic that Democrats might be able to win back control of the U.S. House of Representatives, though she declined to rate the chances of doing so.
“I’m not in the chances rating business,” she said. “I’m in the business of working hard, recruiting good candidates, raising a lot of money and talking about the importance of moving our economy forward and fighting for the middle class.”
She added, “The voters seem to have responded pretty well to our message of … making sure that everybody has an opportunity to be successful. And that’s what we’ll do again.”
