Young women who regularly consume blueberries and strawberries may enjoy a decreased risk of heart attack, says a new study from researchers at the University of East Anglia in the U.K. For the study, lead researcher Aedin Cassidy and colleagues followed 93,000 women for eighteen years.
The women were all aged 25 to 40 at the beginning of the study and reported their diet every four years. Those who reported eating three or more servings of berries a week showed a significantly lower heart attack risk than those who did not.
“Substances naturally present in red/blue colored fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of a heart attack 32% in young and middle-aged women,” said Cassidy, who adds that the new data “could have a have a significant effect on prevention efforts.”
The new data will appear in this month’s Circulation.
