In a move that will encourage digital music sales and help fight piracy, Amazon has announced that customers will receive free, digital copies of music CDs that they have bought earlier.
AutoRip, the new service, will automatically give a free digital copy of eligible CDs to customers, who will find the music in their cloud storage accounts. The service is currently open to US users only and 50,000 CDs are eligible on offer.
How was the catalog compiled? Amazon collected all those albums that have been popular among its customers over the fifteen years. Bestselling albums like “Thriller” by Michael Jackson, “Overexposed” by Maroon 5, “Uno!”, “Dos!” and “Tre!” by Green Day and “21” by Adele made it into the catalog.
So if you’ve bought a CD from Amazon anytime since 1998 (when the company started), you are eligible for a free digital copy delivered right into your account. AutoRip music is provided in high-quality 256 Kbps MP3 audio.
The idea behind this service is rather novel, as customers otherwise had to rip CDs manually to add them onto their virtual collections. Interestingly, users can access their account from their tablets and smartphones.
Both Apple and Google offer similar services through their online music stores, with Apple owning more than 50 percent of the market share in this business.
